This blog is dedicated to my mother, June Henion. Now 97, June has been fighting age-related macular degeneration since her late 80s. For this otherwise healthy women, losing her eyesight to this condition has nearly stalled her in her tracks. An incredible seamstress and quilt artist, losing her eyesight is taking away the parts of her life that she loves the most. Moreover, this is personal since AMD tends to run in families. By looking at the challenges she faces every day; reporting the latest research and resources, I hope to not only help my mother better live with this disease, but I also hope to be able to one day report actual cures. If a cure is not on the horizon, perhaps better ways of prevention are.

My name is Candace Hoffmann. I am a medical journalist by trade, currently working as a public relations professional for a large health system. I will put my expertise to work as I explore and share what I find out about this condition just as I did with my book Breaking the Silence on Women’s Hair Loss.
Here’s to your health. Protect your vision!
